oh, you make me feel so much better about becoming older and less idealistic about the 'benefits' of technologly amongst the web2.0/endgadet evangelists. there's an ideology there in boing boing and slashdot.

anyroad, friction is a good filter, yeah! and i think that friction can be sold as a 'value', as something that allows for greater satisfaction. how easy is it now to become a 'fan' of a band for example? you can become knowledgeable in minutes and display all the accoutrements of an aged roadie. your knowledge and material goods are no longer a display of 'time', of 'effort'. i know plenty of people that have lost interest in what was a cult 'endeavour' because of the ease through which digital media enables expertise and pseudo fan status to be affected. i'm sure that people are now more receptive to the idea that for satisfaction you need to employ some effort; you can't just join the club.

I guess one example that follows that is guerilla marketing - deliberately *not* putting things on billboards, for fear that it removes the valuable processes via which people discover a product.
